The Days Are Numbered for Your Freon-Based AC System
Air Conditioning | New AC System
If you recently had your air conditioning system checked out and it needed a charge of Freon (also known as R22 refrigerant), you might have heard yourself gasp over the price. That’s assuming your AC service provider could even find a supply of Freon.
Why R22 Refrigerant Has Been Banned
The Clean Air Act of 1990 laid out a plan to phase out R22 refrigerant by the year 2020 due to its harmful effects on our environment. Both the production of R22 and its release into the atmosphere cause damage to the ozone layer.

The first step in phasing out the use of R22 refrigerant occurred in 2010 when all new AC systems were required to include R22’s replacement, R410A, a non-ozone depleting refrigerant.

Over the past decade, R22 has become increasingly harder to obtain, and much more expensive based on decreased supply. Where once a pound of Freon may have cost $5 – $15, today the same quantity is likely to cost $200 and more – in some cases, much more.
Starting in 2020, R22 Will No Longer Be Available
Price aside, as of January 1, 2020, R22 refrigerant will no longer be available at any price, even for system re-charging.

For that reason alone, you should consider replacing your R22-based system now. That way, you can prevent being without air conditioning for an extended period of time. If you wait until next year, you’ll have no choice but to replace in case your refrigerant supply runs dry. Now, you do have a choice.
