How to Keep Your House Clean & Organized

In a perfect world, laundry would fold and put itself away, that sink-full of dirty dishes would magically disappear, and stainless-steel appliances would repel stains and fingerprints. Unfortunately, we don’t live in “Perfect-ville.”

The truth is, no matter how busy our lives might be, time still must be made to keep up with household chores.

Here are some tips on how to accomplish more in less time:

Spend 15-20 minutes cleaning each day. You don’t need to dedicate an entire weekend to cleaning and de-cluttering. If you tackle one thing each day – like clearing out a closet, the pantry, or even your desk drawer – you’ll be surprised at how much you’ve accomplished by week’s end.

If it takes less than one minute, do it right away. Clutter and dirt add up quickly, so instead of setting aside that one small task for later, do it immediately. Put the plate in the dishwasher instead of the sink, toss useless flyers and coupons as you’re going through mail instead of letting them pile up, and hang up coats and sweatshirts right after taking them off instead of dropping them on the floor.

Start a load of laundry first thing in the morning. As you wait for your coffee to brew, drop in a load of laundry. By the time you’re done with breakfast or getting ready for work, your clothes will be ready for the dryer.

Pick up clutter from other rooms. You’re always walking into and out of different rooms, so why not grab that empty cup or stray toy and put it back where it belongs to help keep clutter to a minimum?

Use downtime wisely. In the time it takes to bring a pot of water to a boil or microwave your lunch, you can unload and/or reload your dishwasher, fold a pile of laundry, wipe down kitchen counters, or vacuum a floor or two.

Make your bed every morning. It will make your bedroom look neater and give you a feeling of pride and accomplishment – now that’s a great way to start the day!

Assign chores. Show us where it’s written that house cleaning is the sole province of a parent? It’s not, and you can lighten your load even further by assigning specific chores to other family members.
