Outdoor Grilling Safety in Spring Hill and Shelbyville

Burgers, check. Hot dogs, check. Macaroni and potato salads, check. And there you have them, the core essentials for a backyard barbecue and he unofficial start of summer.

But before you start inviting friends, family, and neighbors over to join you, ask yourself this:  Have you taken all the necessary precautions to make sure that your gathering is just as safe as it is fun? To be on the extra safe side, follow these tips to ensure that your guests remember your summer cookouts – big or small – for all the right reasons.

  1. If you have a propane grill, check the hose connections before lighting it up for the first time. And periodically check hoses for damage and leaks throughout the grilling season.

  2. Place your grill on a steady, non-flammable surface a minimum of 10 feet away from your home, shed, awnings, tree branches, or anything else that might catch fire.

  3. Always open your gas grill lid before lighting it.

  4. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill area and designate it a “No Play” zone.

  5. Never leave a hot grill unattended. If you must step away from it, make sure another adult can keep an eye on things.

  6. Use long-handled forks, tongs, and other utensils to prevent burns.

  7. Wear safe clothing, avoiding anything with hanging frills, shirt tails, etc.

  8. Keep your grill clean by removing coals (only once they are completely cooled), burnt on food, and grease after each use.

  9. Never attempt to move a lit or hot grill.

  10. Be ready to extinguish a fire safely, keeping a fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water on a grease fire, as it will only fan the flames. You can control grease fires with baking soda.
