Summer Energy Conservation Tips

Most people expect higher energy costs in the summer. We crank up the AC; kids spend extra time on their electronics; and, when they do go outside, you have tons more largely on your hands.

Even still, just follow these energy-saving tips and watch your utility costs go down.

  1. Be Smart with Your Thermostat. For every degree you raise your thermostat above 72º, you save up to 3% of your cooling expenses.

  2. Use fans. Running a ceiling fan in tandem with your AC system means you can raise your thermostat 4º while maintaining the same level of comfort.

  3. Keep the Cool Air In. Direct sunlight will heat up your home and drive up AC costs. Draw the blinds during the hottest parts of the day, especially if your windows are facing south.

  4. LED Lighting. Consider replacing your incandescent bulbs with LEDs. They use 75% less energy and last 50 times longer.

  5. Use the Barbeque. Take the heat out of the kitchen and cook outdoors. Pop some burgers on the grill, invite a few friends over, and enjoy great weather while keeping your kitchen nice and cool.

  6. Wash with Cold or Warm Water. Since 90% of washing machine energy is used to heat the water, wash your clothes in cold or warm water and enjoy big savings.
